Roraima Nursery, Kevin Hoffman Walk and Suealoe Garden visits, Tuesday 6th Dec 2022
A group from our Garden Interest Group, led by Terry O'Brien ventured to Lara and visited the Roraima Nursery which specialises in unusual, exotic, drought tolerant and architectural plants. Roraima Nursery also offers a large variety of natives, perennials, ferns, palms, bottle trees, and one of the largest selections of cacti and succulents in Victoria. The passion of plants was obvious when the owner spoke to our group on arrival, and as we wandered through the planted gardens, we could understand how the nursery has grown in the last 22 years, to become a beautiful garden of plantings suitable for all garden types. There is something for everyone, and the visit was totally enjoyed.
The group headed to the Keven Hoffman Walk in Lara after our Roraima visit. The walk is Lara's native garden trail that stretches along the east side of the Hovell's Creek. Kevin Hoffman, his family and supporters have shaped this significant native garden path since 1970 with its lush ground covers, flowering native trees and shrubs. In 2013, friends of the Hoffman Walk were formed to ensure this native walking trail continues to be well maintained and evolve for the enjoyment of all.
Geoff and Leona took time out for a well deserving cuppa in this calm, peaceful walk.
After the walk, Terry took us to the Serendip Sanctuary where we had lunch, then moved on to Suealoe Garden and Nursery at Lovely Banks. The owner, Sue, spoke about her nursery, then allowed us to venture around her gardens which she started in the year 2000, with native trees bordering her 1 hectare block, then slowly adding many aloe plants, along side a large range of native shrubs, cacti, succulents and trees. A large bird aviary and cattery adjoin the house and a visit inside the aviary is a must. We enjoyed afternoon tea while admiring our many purchases. Many thanks to Terry for this amazing and fun tour around Lara.
